K-5 language arts curriculum formerly listed in some state materials as Expeditionary Learning or OUR Expeditionary Learning; those closely related versions share this review page. — K-5 implementation — Reading Writing Literature Foundational Skills Knowledge Building
The EL Education curriculum has significant gaps in vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and writing instruction. In our experience, it also lacks sufficient comprehension practice aligned with Tennessee’s state assessment expectations, requiring teachers to create or find additional materials to prepare students adequately.
Lessons are often too lengthy, and spending several weeks on a single text or topic makes it difficult to maintain student engagement and cover other essential skills. Many materials do not hold our students’ interest. As a result, we constantly have to supplement the curriculum to meet students’ needs, address foundational skills, and support state testing readiness. This creates a substantial additional workload for teachers.

The curriculum comes with multiple materials just for the teacher. Rather than just having one "teacher guide". The teacher materials are difficult to follow. Extensive training would be required to get the in depth picture of how to use EL. Teachers will need to supplement for writing.

What did you use to supplement for writing?
ReadingisCool!8/8/2026
I continued with teaching the Writing Process and supplemented the reading materials that were given with grade level texts that better fit my students individual needs. I followed the book "The Writing Revolution" in order to help with lesson plans, the writing process, and helping student individual needs. This gave a much better result in my students writing capabilities.
