Eureka Math

Eureka Math had many strong areas in its content. It showed plenty of examples that teachers can use, which in turn, saved planning time. As a 4th grade teacher that taught all subjects, it was nice having something that provided videos, most materials, and examples for teachers. This allowed me to plan math plans faster, especially as I grew more comfortable using the curriculum. If I remember correctly, the majority of the Arkansas standards were accounted for, especially the "Big" standards that were on state testing. I think Eureka Math can improve by providing more resources and materials that will reach students who need extra support. If you are a first year teacher using this curriculum, it can be difficult to follow the teacher manual because so much information is given and the flow of the lessons can be unorganized or confusing. The flow of the curriculum is difficult to figure out without any prior knowledge or training. The training teaches you how each part of the lesson should work, but without the training you wouldn't know the expectations. Overall, it is not a bad curriculum but you have to take more time at the beginning, especially as a new teacher, to get the idea of how to work the curriculum correctly.

Eureka Math has some strong, rigorous mathematical content, but there are significant areas that need improvement. It is missing several Tennessee State Standards, requiring teachers to supplement with additional resources. Some independent practice problems are not adequately modeled in the lesson notes, which can leave students unprepared to work independently. The sequence of lessons does not always flow logically, making it difficult to build a cohesive progression of learning. Overall, Eureka Math can be a resource, but teachers need prior experience and a strong understanding of the standards to identify what can be used effectively and where supplementation is needed.
